I bet the windows update is a plain red herring.

The probably most interesting thing that happened on the Windows update is
a reboot (provided it was an update that required a reboot, like the
recent Gimmiv.A RPC worm security fix by MS).

(I admit I didn't analyze Ted's report, sorry)
