Not very often, actually. If it weren't for automatic updates, I 
probably would never reboot it. (lately, if it weren't for automatic 
updates, I would probably never even use that machine)

And so I think the red herring hypothesis is probably a good one. The 
reboot was for the most recent critical update (and only that update).

The local site staff did some research and had a quick look, but they 
didn't have any other ideas (aside from the standard "you can reinstall 
Windows over top... that shouldn't hurt anything... maybe it will help").

For kicks, I logged into another machine with my domain account. That 
machine did *NOT* have the overlay icons...

So I don't know WHERE the icons are coming from. There must be some 
hidden icon cache SOMEWHERE other than the IconCache.db. That might 
explain why I see the icons for domain-related folders even on the local 
account. Is there a GLOBAL icon cache somewhere?
