I wouldn't say the thread itself is pointless. There is the point that most people think the mounting bracket is over priced.
But I agree that all the rest of it, BOM, Commodities, demand, cost to design, and what not have absolutely nothing to do with anything in this case so in that regard it is pointless. It comes down to it being an accessory and a limited demand speciality one at that. Marketing is going to "set" the price.
