Peter, I eventually decided to buy a small 320GB 2.5 hdd. I had to add external power but all I have on it is music files and it has worked out just fine. I had too much stuff on my WD 1T hard drive a lot of which was not music so I'm using it for other things now.
Its a lot less frustrating and really just a small investment for some good old peace of mind.
