Hi Peter, I know you have things working now with an external server, but would it be all right to answer some questions? I'm trying to understand why some people are having such problems and I still don't have a good handle on why some people have major disconnection isssues.
First off, is the drive getting its power from the USB bus or does it have its own power supply? If its bus powered have you tried running with a powered hub? Did that make any difference? There have been suggestions that these dropping connection issues are power related and that an external supply connection should fix them. Another possibility is the drive going to sleep on its own and dropping the connection. Most drives when they go to sleep just spin down the platter but leave the connection to the bus intact. There are some indications that this may not be the case for some drives. Have you tried playing with the drives sleep settings? Does turning sleep off altogether make the connection problems go away? These are the two scenarios that I know of that have been determined to be a prime cause in some cases. It would be really helpful to know if there is something else going on.
