The Touch has a feature that even if the currently loaded firmware craps the bed you can easily revert to the previous firmware, so there's little to worry about. The flash memory of the Touch stores both the current firmware and a complete copy of the old firmware.
To revert to the previous firmware hold down the volume + button on the IR remote while rebooting (not resetting) the Touch via the button on the back. A reboot is done just by pressing the button momentarily.
