Yes any squeezebox at 100% volume automatically pads the 16bit word with
8 bits making it 24bit .

The spdif standard is so that if the DAC can't handle it, it disregards
the 8 extra bit's, so this is within the spdif spec still compatible
with all DAC's .

*96/44.1=2.176870748* This means that the algoritm making 96k must
"guess" fill in the blanks and possibly throw away some info.

Think the other way around converting back the 24/96 file that
originated with a 16/44.1 to 16/44.1 would you get the same file back
again ? given that you not used dither for up-sampling .

Her I may talk out the wrong bodily orifice but dither is commonly
agreed to be needed when down-sampling not up-sampling, at least by
professionals. I might not be correct about this , some insight from
people who really knows are welcome ?
(disregard all audiophile opinion's and anecdotes about it, it is not
information).

I can't imagine a 88.2/96 ready external DAC *NOT* upsampling
(oversampling) by default ! every 96/192 DAC's I seen upsample all
incomming signals exactly to avoid the brick wall filter with 44.1k.
That is why they used 96k or 192k chips in the first place to use after
their up-sampling filter ? not to be compatible with the 0.0000001% HD
music market ?
Same goes for CD palyer with 96k or better DAC's it may be called
oversampling but the idea is the same, this has been around since the
1990's .

Sorry that I have not yet tinkered with convert.conf files or added a
customconvert.conf I'm just clueless? btw depending on platform such
simple things as permissions ? is sbs allowed to read your file ?
