To avoid power supply, sleep mode and speed issues many have encountered with external USB drives with conventional hard drives, perhaps you should consider solid state drives. Probably many failures were due to USB port of Squeezebox Touch unable to supply sufficient current to hard drive (particularly during spin up) without separate power supply for the drive (owner's fault). Though solid state drive requires far less current than conventional hard drive, it is still safer to have dedicated power supply for the solid state drive as you never know how good is the power supply built for Squeezebox Touch.
