Try using aplay -D plughw:1,0 name.wav and see what happens. That should work for almost anything. When playing wav files with linux commands I would stay from file names with embedded spaces.
When I'm doing this sort of thing I put some files on an SD card, plug that in before boot. That way you can use your normal cd ripped etc files. They show up as: /media/mmc../files I don't remember exactly what the mmc name is, its mmc followed by some other characters. I can't understand why plug wouldn't work, it should handle pretty much anything you can throw at it.
