One thing I don't think I put in these posts, if you are going to use aplay to test out the DAC you can't have the squeezebox software talking to it as well. You need to change the default line in the sound.conf to something other than the USB DAC. The squeezebox software connects to whatever is setup as the default at boot time. Since it has the device nobody else can talk to it.
So set the line to something like: pcm.!default fab4 This will leave the USB DAC open for aplay to connect to.
