The iPods have multitasking if they are on 4.0, the App doesn't because
it's not a native iOS App but a Webapp. But usually the biggest delays
are because the iPod shuts down WiFi when idle, also, even the Logitech
App does preserve it's state.

You could of course use iPeng which you can keep running when the
screen is idle, albeit not in the background while other Apps are
running - that's simply considered extremely bad style in iOS because
it drains battery like hell and so many people forget about Apps in the
background.

The servers are discovered through an auto discovery feature and that
should be quite quick, it usually takes longer to retrieve the actual
player state including playlists and things.

If you are doing such a big installation, why don't you run a dedicated
Squeezebox Server, that would be faster. MySB also would.
