Doesn't have to be at 100% for either one. Many folks who understand
all this technology better than me believe it is ok so long as the
volume on the TOUCH is at about 70% or higher.  The volume adjustment
in the touch (and other SB players) is done in 24 bits so it is very
good quality digital volume control.  Myself (for both analog and
digital), I set the volume on my preamp such that if the TOUCH volume
is 100% this is a bit louder than I would ever play under normal
circumstances.  That way, I can adjust volume up or down with ipeng app
on my iphone and not drop it below 70%.
