A large amount of CPU and memory resources can be used when loading
large playlists. Information for every track needs to be fetched from
the database and then transferred into that memory structure. It was
common for people to load thousands of tracks at a time into the current
playlist, which would bring many servers (not just the Touch) to
grinding to a halt, causing dropouts and other nonresponsive behavior.
So a limit was introduced.

That's not going to happen. The limitations of the hardware became
apparent during the beta testing of the Touch, which took place several
years ago. As it was, it lead to a number of limitations placed on the
software to make it as functional as it is.
