aha! I don't think I picked up in all this discussion that you were using a USB-Bus powered HD with the TOUCH (you probably mentioned it, and I didn't notice). One of the main recommendations on successful use of a HD with the TOUCH has long been to use a HD that has its own power and is not using power from the TOUCH USB connector. Sorry I didn't notice this. It would have save you a lot of time.
