That seems to be a DAC specific issue, I'm using my DAC from SBT direct to an amp without a problem. As others have mentioned the trick is to set the gain of the system so that max from the DAC is a little bit louder than you will ever want to play, then you can run the Sb volume control in a range where it is going to work well.
