Greg, Since you asked, I've successfully flashed my wrt54gl v1.1 purchased from Amazon with no problems at all. I used openwrt-wrt54g-squashfs.bin from White Russian RC5.
FWIW, I followed a howto at http://wiki.openwrt.org/WirelessBridgeWithWPAHowto to get a working bridge using WPA2-PSK, with a bit of fiddling.
