The State of NC put some heavy incentives in the package to sweeten the deal. One of those incentives was to exempt Google from having to pay any property taxes for the next 30 years.
Just to clarify: the State put in some incentives, but so did the County, and the amounts of the exemptions vary based on how much google invests in the area: See http://www.newsobserver.com/102/story/534390.html "Lenoir and Caldwell County leaders agreed to waive 100 percent of Google's business property taxes and 80 percent of its real-estate taxes for three decades. The General Assembly last year approved a measure that eliminated sales taxes on electricity and certain other expenses. "Commerce Department officials approved a separate grant for the company, and Google can apply for more tax credits. State concessions could exceed $96 million over 30 years. County and city leaders had no estimate for their enticements. All depend on how much Google builds."
