Do you have the installation CD of the version which worked? If you do it  
sounds like there is an easy way to test the hardware. Run from that older  
version and use the live mode for testing. If the issue does not appear it's  
probably a driver issue. If the issue does appear it may be a hardware issue.

If it is a driver issue you might be able to file a bug report. You would do  
this via Ubuntu normally. Unless it is specific to Trisquel. You will have to  
test Ubuntu though to ensure that you aren't filing a Trisquel bug with  
Ubuntu.
