There are big companies maintaining forks or rewriting whole projects to avoid the GPL version 3. Making their work harder while not hindering cooperating users seems a more worthy goal than widest adoption in such a case. Have you also seen what MediaGoblin aims for? AGPL seems perfect for a service useful on many servers which might be controlled by the users.
