I don't think I understand. If you gave the font bars on the I and renamed it
"Ubuntu derivative barred I", I don't think they'd have grounds to sue you
even if you distributed the fonts commercially. You were simply complying
with their request for inSubstantially Changed fonts; they asked you to name
it that way and use their trademark.
