Hi Michael D,

You could start with the 10 Commandments in Exodus 20:8-11:

“Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the 7th day is a Sabbath of the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.”

Also Ex 31:13-17, including, “…You shall surely observe My Sabbaths; for this is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am the Lord who sanctifies you. Therefore you are to observe the Sabbath, for it is holy to your. Everyone who profanes it shall surely be put to death; for whoever does any work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people. For six days work maybe done, but on the 7th day there is a Sabbath of complete rest, holy to the Lord; whoever does any work on the Sabbath day shall surely be put to death. So the sons of Israel shall observe the Sabbath, to celebrate the Sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual cov enant. It is a sign between Me and the sons of Israel forever;…”

No one disagrees on whether the Sabbath God was talking about was Saturday—it was.  However some disagree as to whether this still applies to us today. Personally, I believe God never rescinded this commandment. May each person follow his own conscience on this, is my opinion.

Michael D: Thanx Izzy for the scriptures. Have you ever considered though that the OT sabbath was a type/shadow of a different rest in the NT. To me this is an important consideration since in the Church age, believers are never command to observe a sabbath, but are instructed to enter into the rest of faith which Jesus gave us, where we now cease from our own labours, but accept His labour for us in being at peace now with the Father? How do you see that? (Hebrews 4 would be a good reference for this).

But one should consider it seriously.  I would be interested in the views of others on TT about this.

Izzy
