For portability, lightweight, speed, and
extensibility, it's hard to beat the combination of
Emacs and JDE.  The current version has a lisp / java
interface to JPDA.  Paul K. does a great job with JDE,
and users have contributed tons of useful features. 
See the list of contributed software on the website.
More learning curve with Emacs, but it's worth the
effort.
