Oh, I never noticed this :D I'm going to have a look for the reason
why it is not possible anymore.
I've looked into that already and found the cause, which is this bug in
Sphinx <= 1.1.3: https://bitbucket.org/birkenfeld/sphinx/issue/1015/
In combination with a recent version of jQuery, this breaks the sidebar.
The solution is to either use an older version of jQuery (1.4.2 instead
of 1.8.2 like on our old server), or to use the development version of
Sphinx for creating the docs, because the bug is already fixed there.
I'm not sure if we can influence any of this on readthedocs.org.
