If it was before or after a bit, the desk is to hold whatever props are needed. He doesn't use it otherwise. Since it was Monday's show he probably sat behind the desk for Headlines in the same segment. I say probably, even though I saw mention of Headlines (Healdlines would be a much better segment, BTW) either on this list or an article discussing the statement.
