Worth noting Richards was nowhere to be seen - though maybe I missed the
original reason for bringing him up in this thread.

While I am here, I will take a seat on the side that says that racist jokes
do not deserve the hemlock. I am surprised by the assumption that anyone
has forgotten that incident, or has somehow given Richards a pass. It is
brought up almost anytime his name is, and he has not exactly strolled back
into the mainstream of popular culture.

I know Kevin has  a problem with public apologies, but really, this is why
society has evolved that ritual. We all say and do stupid and mean things,
often without a very good reason or excuse. People who do the same stupid
and mean things over and over again should be socially punished; people who
acknowledge the mistake and apologize for it should be allowed back in the
tribe where they are offered shelter from the cold and dark.
