I do think the author of the Atlantic article is putting the most extreme interpretation possible on the allegations, but...I also think that, were the allegations accepted at face value, and were the relevant statutes of limitation not expired (I don't know about that one way or the other) a prosecutor so inclined could probably find charges to file against Cruise. In any event, these are serious issues, that directly involve Cruise, and go far beyond questions of the form "why do you belong to such a weird church?", or even "how can you belong to a Church that does bad things?". -- -- TV or Not TV ....
