In debian, it is (also) provided by the vim-common package. It looks like vim (the project) is the origin of the command. That was Harald's objection to using xxd. Unfortunately, it appears to be a reasonable objection. $ dpkg -S /usr/bin/xxd vim-common: /usr/bin/xxd IMHO, vim and xxd are essential programs so I'm OK with using xxd.
