I agree with the fact that some proprietary formats are more popular. Is it because they are good? It is because users were forced to use them. Being most of them a specific OS users, they did not have the freedom to choose but to adapt whatever good things they were told about. I agree we don't have money to put fancy ads on the websites, billboards or on tv to promote non-proprietary formats. If we keep supporting those evils, then users will never feel the urge to know why they are evil and why we don't support them.
