Trying to narrow this down a bit using the LifeDrive, I've discovered
that it does *not* crash in recovery mode.

I tried some lsmod and diff action to determine if the problem was
related to some sort of module insertion that didn't happen in recovery
mode, but I eventually modprobed every additional normally used module
while in recovery mode and could not reproduce the crash.

Could this perhaps be triggered by some program running outside the
kernel?
