I managed to kill it by turning the LifeDrive back on (it had gone to
sleep) and initiating a HotSync, which did not work.  I had previously
sent several -9 signals to it, so I assume those made it through once it
was apparently freed up.

(Sorry for the comment spam; it seems I keep getting new possibly-useful
bits of info.  I am done for now.)
