Now, the keyboard works. The keyboard began to work after gave the kernel parameter atkbd.set=3. The mouse worked only when I switched to the i386 kernel. (I was using the generic kernel till then).

No, I installed freshly from the alternative cd (after being faced with the same problem in the live cd and not being able to do anything there).
