Thank you!

I'm sixty and I raised and home schooled a disabled and difficult son
all by myself from before birth, as his father died in a car accident
only 3 months into the pregnancy. I have learned not to take life's
little, and even not so little, frustrations personally or too
seriously. He came out alright, in spite of 21 years of daily trauma,
and is now on scholarships at University and getting straight A's and
A+'s. So one must never give up, I have learned. He's thriving and
happy, so it was all worth it.

However, there was not the media icon "3BF8-0A57" on the desktop, and
when I tried to find it, clicking on a "button" that said "media" it
gave me an error thingie, which I took a screen shot of and am
attaching, if that helps. I searched everything I could think of, but
couldn't find anything with an "eject" or "unmount" option, related to
the media. So what I'll do is wait until I shut the computer off, and
then remove it. Thank you for confirming that suspicion of mine, and
also giving me an alternative. I'll watch more closely next time I
insert it, and see if maybe I did something I wasn't aware of that
deleted what I'm looking for.

Now that I remember, there seemed to be two windows, by the time I'd
checked the computer screen after fiddling with the thumb drive and
finally getting it mounted properly (I assume). I didn't realize there
were two at first, because I could only see the one. The other one,
when I saw it, said something about an error, I think. I'll repeat the
whole process, knowing better what's happening next time, and go through
it all more slowly. I can't find the icon now, but perhaps next time I
will be able to. I may have deleted it unknowingly. Or may have missed
some other pertinent information that will help you solve this mystery.

Thank you for explaining WHY not to try to remove it prematurely. It's
really a lot more fun to use a computer when you understand how and why
it does things and why you need to do things a certain way yourself.
One of my biggest problems is not having a big enough vocabulary yet.
Too many terms are still a mystery to me. Is there such a thing as a
dictionary for defining computer terminology?

Thank you for all your help, and I'll be waiting eagerly to see if
something turns up tomorrow in your search for a solution to the mystery
of the unresponsive relationship between my CD's, the computer, and the
Ubuntu program or whatever is ignoring them.

Till then, your grateful student,

Doris

Before Ubuntu upgrade to 9.10, the Rhythmbox side pane had the item "Unknown"
which I had to click to play inserted CD's. That's missing, so I can't play
CD's. Help! I don't know what to do, if not that?
