@Roy Lee - I share your sentiments, NetworkManager adds 3 seconds to pings (and other packets I assume) every couple of minutes; WICD doesn't exhibit this behaviour. It is very noticeable when browsing etc., and happens on the ath5k chip I use on another laptop too. Why not let the user decide when to scan?
