Have just found an article on Ask Ubuntu
http://askubuntu.com/questions/337049/how-can-i-install-a-synaptics-pointing-driver
regarding what should appear in the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log. Having checked
the log file I found the following showing why the Synaptic driver is not being
loaded. Investigating further.

[ 26.450] (II) LoadModule: "syntp"
[ 26.469] (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input/syntp_drv.so
[ 26.487] (II) Module syntp: vendor="Synaptics Inc."
[ 26.487] compiled for 1.13.0, module version = 1.0.0
[ 26.487] Module class: X.Org XInput Driver
[ 26.487] ABI class: X.Org XInput driver, version 18.0
[ 26.487] (EE) module ABI major version (18) doesn't match the server's
version (20)
[ 26.487] (II) UnloadModule: "syntp"
[ 26.487] (II) Unloading syntp
[ 26.487] (EE) Failed to load module "syntp" (module requirement mismatch, 0)
