Christopher M. Penalver (penalvch), I have managed to get the touchpad working without installing Ubuntu from scratch.
I deleted the packages "Synaptic Touchpad Driver for X.Org Server" and "Commercial Driver Package", choosing the option for "Complete Removal". After a power off reboot, I installed the Touchpad Driver (the Commercial Package was not available for install) and rebooted again. The touchpad is now working so this ticket can be closed. Many thanks for your efforts on this. The questions you raised were very instrumental in pointing my thoughts in the right direction.
