OK booting with apci=off sorts it out! Rather wish I had done this first now :) Come to think of it, when Dapper originally went onto this machine, it would not boot at all without apci=off, so I never saw the effect of the OS on the keyboard under these circumstances.
Setting apci=off also improves the boot time, as expected, but this is still rather prolonged; are there any other ways I could decrease the wait time?
