I agree with you in that staying closer to upstream is better than patching. And I agree the upstream changelog does not look too dangerous, but the devil is in the details (will it print on Tuesdays?), and there are also certainly sensible but also non-trivial packaging changes that come with what you propose.
If I look at reverse-depends (see below) I don't feel confident that any of those won't regress. I am still not approving this, but I'll leave ubuntu-release subscribed.
