This sounds like the kind of deadlock I encountered (and fixed) during
the development of
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/merge_requests/4725

I'm not sure if the final version that landed has the same protections
or if this is something slightly different. Since you know what function
it is, please provide a stack trace so we can confirm...
