I appear to be affected by the same or a very similar shutdown/reboot regression on Ubuntu 24.04. Note that i used an AI agent to find this issue #, and extract relevant data from the logs, and draft this response. I'm happy to run further tests as needed.
System Lenovo LOQ 15APH8 laptop Ubuntu 24.04 LTS AMD Ryzen 7840HS with radeon 780m integrated graphics + NVIDIA discrete GPU RTX4060 mobile NVIDIA driver: 595.84, using the open kernel module (nvidia-driver-595-open / nvidia-dkms-595-open) Secure Boot enabled; NVIDIA DKMS modules are correctly signed and loaded Current kernel: 7.0.0-31-generic Also reproduced with: 7.0.0-30-generic Dual boot with Windows 11, each EFI and OS on its own NVME drive Symptoms Shutdown and reboot proceed normally through userspace shutdown. Filesystems are unmounted, systemd reaches the final shutdown/reboot targets, and the journal reaches systemd-shutdown syncing filesystems and sending SIGTERM to remaining processes. The display then goes black, but the laptop remains powered on for a couple of minutes before eventually completing the shutdown/reboot. Prior to the 2026-09-04 updates, shutdown/reboot completed quickly. The several-minute delay started after that update. I have reproduced the delayed shutdown with both 7.0.0-30-generic and 7.0.0-31-generic. Windows 11 on the same dual-boot machine shuts down quickly and normally, so the delay appears specific to Linux. When the regression appeared The problem started immediately after an APT update performed on 2026-09-04 at 09:27. The transaction upgraded the HWE kernel from 7.0.0-30.30~24.04.1 to 7.0.0-31.31~24.04.1 and installed: linux-image-7.0.0-31-generic linux-modules-7.0.0-31-generic linux-headers-7.0.0-31-generic linux-tools-7.0.0-31-generic However, the shutdown problem also occurs when booting the previously working 7.0.0-30-generic, so it does not appear to be specific to the 7.0.0-31 kernel alone. The same transaction also made a significant linux-firmware change: linux-firmware: 20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu2.27 → 20240318.git3b128b60.0ubuntu3.1 It introduced the new split firmware packages, including: linux-firmware-amd-graphics 20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu3.2 linux-firmware-amd-misc 20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu3.1 linux-firmware-nvidia-graphics 20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu3.1 linux-firmware-realtek 20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu3.1 linux-firmware-misc 20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu3.1 plus the Intel, Qualcomm, MediaTek, Marvell, Broadcom, QLogic, Mellanox and Netronome split firmware packages. Other packages upgraded in the same transaction included: power-profiles-daemon 0.21-1ubuntu1 → 0.21-1ubuntu2 libinput 1.25.0-1ubuntu3.5 → 1.25.0-1ubuntu3.6 alsa-ucm-conf 1.2.10-1ubuntu5.13 → 1.2.10-1ubuntu5.14 network-manager 1.46.0-1ubuntu2.7 → 1.46.0-1ubuntu2.8 snapd 2.76+ubuntu24.04.1 → 2.76.3+ubuntu24.04 procps/libproc2 Docker/containerd packages Python 3.12 and Kerberos packages NVIDIA was not upgraded in this transaction. The machine is using NVIDIA 595.84, and DKMS successfully builds the NVIDIA module for both 7.0.0-30-generic and 7.0.0-31-generic. Package integrity checks with dpkg --audit and apt-get check are clean. Additional observation During/after one of these delayed Linux reboots/shutdowns, the laptop keyboard backlight can turn on before GRUB appears. After shutting down/restarting through Windows, this behavior is not observed. This may indicate that Linux is leaving some platform/device/EC state behind during the failed final shutdown.
