Thanks again for these informations! Two really important logs would
still be needed if you can attach them after reproducing the bug :

dmesg < dmesg.log
sudo lspci -nnvv > lspci-nnvv.log

I don't know if gfxboot can be the cause of this problem but if you have
time to test it, don't hesitate to do so. If I was you, I would not test
grub2 because it's not completely stable and I really doubt that current
grub version is causing the issues you have.

Your menu.lst file contains non standard option "ht=on". What happens if
you remove this option? Also I notice that your menu.lst shows Debian
instead of ubuntu, are you really using ubuntu?

Finally, as suggested earlier, does the problem still happens if you
remove both "quiet" and "splash"?
