Your wireless interface is down. I think this means that it has never been configured. On my distro (openSUSE), I would configure it with our system tool for either ifup operations or with NetworkManager. For the latter case, I would then use the applet to select an AP, etc. I'm sure someone will suggest what is needed for Ubuntu.
