As we discovered while working with you while troubleshooting via IRC, the 
problem ended up being the installation of Timidity. Uninstalling it seemed to 
do the trick.

Note that Timidity isn't installed in Ubuntu Studio by default.

As such, I have retroactively added the issue to our release notes for 18.04, 
18.10, and 19.04. We can't stop people from installing it (even accidentally), 
but we can warn people. :)
