You get a choice of which to run on the login page where you enter
your password (not the initial one where you select the user).  Down
the bottom is a box to select what to use.  If you have Ubuntu
selected then it is Unity 3D, if Unity 2D is selected then it is 2D
obviously.  Other selections are Classic and so on.  If U2D does not
appear then it is not installed.  I believe you have to specifically
install U2D to use it:
sudo apt-get install unity-2d
