I've got backup, clean install and restore down to a fine art now, and as always, Your Mileage May Vary, and I actually do the same for Windows and Mac OS as well so I'm probably being cautious, but I would, especially with what is going to change with 12.04 and because it's an LTS release I would be very wary of doing an upgrade.
