I jumped to 4.10.1-041001-generic since I failed to go back to 4.4.0-72 which used to work, everything is working again as it should without any problem, I am now using the latest nvidia driver 381.22 (, also 378.13 worked perfectly fine). The kernel version definitely makes a difference
