something similar happens to me too with lucid beta1.. i can hear the sound when it boots, but the screen looks like a grid of pixels. my graphic card is GeForce 8400M GS / dell inspiron 1520. ctrl+alt+f1 doesn't work, so i don't know how to switch to a terminal.
