I didn't think the malloc implementations were "old" and "new", I thought the malloc implementations are small/slow, large/fast, and a medium. Also, I don't believe any of them are currently broken, or that they're particularly difficult to maintain. (Unlike the threading libraries, which are a pain to debug at the best of times because most problems you have with them are race conditions you can't reliably reproduce.)
