I am looking at getting a new computer; and was/am considering a mac.

As such I have started looking into Java 6 support; and I noticed that
it was actually released for macs - but not really. It seems that
Java6 is 64 bit only; and does not work with the first generation of
Intel machines; etc..

There are a couple Java 6 ports for mac (making use of X11 for swing
etc...). I wonder since we are using SWT if we could get away with one
of these Java 6 ports (and just include it as our "jre" in the udig
release?). I have no idea of the quality of these ports but ...

It looks like this stuff is under some kind of research license; seems odd.

Just to add one item to the consideration table, mind that you're
giving up JAI and JAI ImageIO native support if you go Mac.
No sharp drop in functionality, but one in performance for sure.
As for ImageIO-ext I believe there are some experimental builds
for Mac, so you should be somewhat covered for the formats that
are supported by it.
