If I had a Franc for every time someone made a statement that "XYZ is the
future"...
I'd be even richer than I already am.

It's not innovation. Innovation is "building a better mousetrap", not trying to
reinwent the
wheel, and introduce even more problems than were intended to solve.
Reinventing the wheel means "we're uninspired and don't know what else to do,
so we're
going to jump on the 'me too' bandwagon". It's not the Toyota way, it's not
incremental
improvement.
Let me tell you something about IPS. Well first of all, let me ask you a
question:
what am I supposed to do with a deduplication feature in a highly unstable
development
distribution such as OpenSolaris? I need to solve real world problems in a
mission critical
environment, not hack-it-'till-it-works for hacking's sake.
Now back to IPS. Why reinvent the wheel? Incremental improvement means adding
the
backgraph algorithm to pkgadd(1M), for automatic dependency resolution. Did you
know
that that particular algorithm is 30+ years old?
OK, Sun engineers won't do it (or else they would have already done it), so
I'll do it myself.
Is it hard to add support for true package clusters, instead of metaclusters?
No, it's not all
that hard, if the algorithm above were implemented.
OK, Sun engineers won't do it, so I'll do it myself!
I also need a distributed cluster filesystem, so that I can get away from using
expensive
SAN storage.
OK, Sun engineers won't do it, so I'll do it myself!
At this point, I have to ask: if I have to do everything myself, and this is
BASIC STUFF,
what exactly do I need Sun engineers for?
I don't need or want them wasting their, and by extension, my time by
reinventing the
mousetrap; I need a BETTER mousetrap, not a copycat approach at building a new
one - IPS!
You do realize, that instead of having to do everything myself, and having to
work on the most
basic functionality, I could have better spent my time engineering the next
killer application
for that same Solaris?
What are you guys thinking!?! This isn't the fashion industry, operating
systems are needed to
solve real world problems, not be a fashion fad!
> Ok, it introduces some new ones, but the same can be said about any new
> technology...
No, the same cannot be said about any new technology! Look at Toyota! Over 50
years of nothing
but INCREMENTAL IMPROVEMENT. And they are the #1 car manufacturer in the world
now.
