Opensolaris is an invitation to make a Distro with 3rd party drivers which is based on Opensolaris (same like Ubuntu is based on Debian) Ubuntu is registered in the "Isle of Man" and Debian in registered in USA. I think the combination of open-source and offshore is the best way to mix open-source with closed-source. Because of the SunRay the words Desktop and Server are today difficult ! I think better is to talk about a Multi-Application-Distro and a One-Application-Distro. So Opensolaris is the best Multi-Application-Distro:-) and Linux and BSD is good for a One-Application-Distro.
